Hawaii...
Just a a little over two weeks ago, we took a trip to Hawaii. It was a delayed graduation trip for Chelsea plus we billed it as a congratulations on finishing a year of college for both me and Chelsea. We had a great time. The weather wasn't fully cooperating as we were there - we had lots of rain and wind. Regardless, it was warmer than Utah and we could wear shorts every single day :)
We stayed in a vacation rental in Kailua. Literally just a block and a half from the beach. The first morning we were there, we took a walk along the beach at 8:30 am and all we could keep saying is, "We are in Hawaii!" It was very lovely.
It was so nice to just have our feet in the warm ocean water as we walked along. The sand was amazing - powdery soft all along the beach.
One of the days we were there, we took a drive to the North Shore. We got out at Sunset Beach to play in the water. It was windy, of course, but the water was just amazing along here. As we were there, a sea lion came up to the beach and parked itself right on the sand. Just a big, brown, shiny, wet blob on the beach. It looked pretty classic. Chelsea had a cute swimsuit to wear, but I was surprised that I could literally count on one hand the number of one-piece suits I saw.
We also went to the pineapple plantation. It was fun to see how pineapples grow and we ate the pineapple whip. It was yummy!
We had shaved ice three different times. Paul and Chelsea were adventurous at Aoki's and tried theirs with red beans in it. I'm happy with ice cream, ice and syrups :) None of this extra fiber stuff!
We went to Waikiki a couple of times. We got poured on both times! Paul and Chelsea went boogie boarding the first time and rented surf boards during the second time. Chelsea loved it and wants to surf again. I enjoyed laying on the beach and reading a book.
We drove around the south part of the island another time. Super windy day! We stopped at the lighthouse turnout to take pictures and we couldn't believe how windy it was! Beautiful scenery though. Chelsea would laugh at so many of the tourists taking pictures because a lot of them would do the peace sign with their fingers as they got their photo taken, so we started doing the same thing ;)

We stopped at the Pali Lookout on one of our drives back to our rental. Once again - super windy! But it was a gorgeous view from atop the mountain! Notice the peace signs...
We visited the temple. Very pretty and the grounds were so very well maintained. We tried going to the Polynesian Cultural Center but it was absolutely POURING when we got there so decided not to go. We drove back to the North Shore and looked at beaches again. We ate at a shrimp truck...it made me feel sick the rest of the day. I'll just stick with Magleby's lemon-pepper shrimp from now on.
Got another snow cone on Chelsea's birthday. It was huge and delicious. This one had ice cream in the bottom and then sweetened condensed milk and whipped cream on top. :) The more sugar the better, right?
One of our last days there, we went to Hanauma Bay to snorkel. They had tried snorkeling at a different beach but it was hard because the ocean was super choppy then. This time worked out a little better, but it was still not ideal weather. Windy (what a surprise) and cool temperatures. They did get to see some fun stuff though. This is the day we went to Waikiki and went surfing too.
As we were driving over to Honolulu to go to Pearl Harbor, it was raining so hard. But once it let up a little bit, we looked at the mountains from the freeway and there were literally waterfalls everywhere! This picture was taken from in our car as we were driving. It was amazing! As we drove back later that day, they were all gone.
Our last day, we went to Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial. The water was not very clear because of all the run-off from the rain and we could only see a small portion of the sunken ship. I was impressed with the museum and displays here. Chelsea was a little ticked because she couldn't see anything, but all the more reason to come back ;)
We had a really good time with Chelsea. I love her sense of humor and intelligence. We enjoyed spending this vacation together and I am happy that she chose Hawaii fro her trip :) I heart the beaches!
